NC's ploy to 'play martyr' to fight anti-incumbency across J&K
Omar threat to resign, real or unreal?

JAMMU, Jan 28: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's purported threat to resign over Congress's delinquent attitude vis-a-vis the creation of administrative units is aimed at fighting the anti-incumbency which National Conference (NC) is facing across the state by becoming 'a martyr for a just public cause'.
If sources are to be believed, Omar seemingly threatened to resign after the Congress leadership sought more time for making up its mind on the creation of new administrative units. Congress had expressed reservations over the Ganai Commission report on the grounds that it was heavily in favour of Kashmir region and had ignored several key areas in Jammu region.
The news was first flashed on NDTV and subsequently taken up by CNN-IBN, two channels which are believed to be close to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders reacted immediately and said that news was flashed with intent to force Congress high command to concede to NC's demand. They even went to the extent of saying that such 'NC has often resorted to this kind of Dramabaazi and blackmail to force us to concede their demands.'
However, Congress sources maintain that if ever Omar decides to resign and actually takes even a single step towards this, he would be more than welcome. "It would be blessing in disguise for us. They are facing serious anti-incumbency across the state. If we would go into elections with them, it would be disastrous for us. So, it is in our interest if Omar actually puts up his papers. But be sure, this is highly unlikely. He has made these statements often," said a senior Congress leader.
Referring Omar Abdullah as 'habitual resignation threat man', he added that the coalition would complete its term. "He knows well that he has nothing to present to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His report card has nothing apart from Laws, Cabinet meetings, tourists and transfers. He failed to even complete project which ex-Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had left midway due to the withdrawal of support by PDP after the Amarnath Land agitation," added the leader.
Another Congress leader, who is believed to be close to JKPCC President Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, said that NC knows well about its score in the upcoming Assembly elections and hence, has been making desperate efforts to get back to its electorate. 'A so-called sacrifice for public cause is what they would be thinking of selling to the commoners. They have been doing this since 1947," added the Cong leader.
He maintained that one is still reminded of 'Green Handkerchief and Pakistani salt' stage shows of NC for coming to Power. He stressed that Omar has been using all possible channels to force J&K Congress into submission. "Pre-poll alliance with Congress would ensure NC's return to power. They are using these tactics to force Congress to take a decision in their favour," added the Congress leader.
Another close aide of ex-Chief Minister and presently, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad confirmed that both Soz and Azad are together on the issue of not fighting elections with NC. "We would go alone in the elections. Let Omar and his party do what they want to do. There will be no pre-poll alliance. All decisions would be taken after the election results are out," added the aide. He too said that anti-incumbency was weighing heavily against NC and it is because of this reason that they have decided to camp in New Delhi.
Another leader said that NC fears defeat would be disastrous for the party since PDP and Congress both have made strong inroads in all the parts of state. "They would face crisis if they come out of the Government. It would be better for them not to play drama anymore and resign as soon as possible if they are serious," said the Congress leader from Valley.
