| Weak Congress may toe the NC line and defeat Jammu | | New administrative units | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 28: The Valley-centric National Conference has stepped up pressure on the weak Congress so that it could implement the biased and anti-Jammu recommendations of Ganai panel on new administrative units. Of course, the local Congress leadership and senior Congress leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad have been trying to create an impression that the Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) under senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand is working in the right direction and it was an appropriate decision on the part of the CSC to visit all the district headquarters and interact with people on ground to reach a right decision. "The objective should be that no area in Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir region should feel that they weren't consulted in the process. Ganai Committee was only an official Committee and had failed to interact with people across the State like the CSC", Azad reportedly also said a few days ago when asked to explain his stand on the creation of new administrative units in the state. What Azad said was correct. Indeed, the recommendations of the Ganai panel are not justifiable, as he made recommendations without ascertaining the views of the people. It was an exercise conducted in a room and its whole objective was to help the NC improve its poll prospects. How else should one interpret the insistence of NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on implementation of the recommendations of the Ganai panel as well as his threat that he could even go to the extent of "sacrificing" his Government on the issue in the event of the CSC not submitting its report to the Government latest by January 31 and that till then he would not hold any Cabinet meeting? Omar Abdullah, who has nothing to sell in the political market and whose Government, like the Congress-led UPA Government, has become thoroughly unpopular owing to its acts of omission and commission and wrong socio-economic and politico-administrative policies, sees in the recommendations of the Ganai panel an opportunity that could help the NC win a respectable number of seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, especially in Kashmir Valley, its core constituency. That's the reason he is putting pressure on the Congress high command and meeting other senior Congress leaders who matter. It's not a secret that the local Congress leaders too have been meeting the Congress high command and senior Congress leaders like Azad and Ambika Soni, in-charge Jammu and Kashmir, with a view to defeat the moves of Omar Abdullah, but their problem is that they depend on AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi whose writ alone runs in the party and who, everyone knows, maintains very good relations with Omar Abdullah. He may endorse the Omar Abdullah's line. After all, the history of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is one of appeasement and betrayal. One can refer to here any number of instances to prove that the Congress high command has all along sacrificed the interests of its own party to keep the Valley leadership in good humour. If the past experience is any indication, then the logical conclusion is that the Congress would ultimately go with Omar Abdullah and if it happens, the results would be disastrous for the Congress party. The next couple of days are very crucial and what happens during this period will determine the political future of the Congress party in the state in general and Jammu province in particular. |
