Statewide campaign for mobilizing public opinion soon
2/1/2014 11:12:45 PM
ET Report
Jammu, Feb 1: With a dubious track record of some NGOs in the country who are involved in various scams and amassing of wealth by looting the State exchequer, the civil society of J&K State has demanded a ban on Government officials running NGOs.
The civil society of the State has decided to approach both Union and State Governments seeking a ban on Government officials in running the NGOs, who instead of concentrating on their official work are devoting entire time in running the NGOs which amounts to dereliction of their duties.
Sources said that the civil society has decided to launch a State wide campaign against running of NGOs by Government employees. The members of civil society will also mobilize the public opinion for the same in entire State, sources added.
Sources said the Peoples Welfare Society Ganderbal chairman Abdul Karim Wani president who is also a veteran trade unionist has made an appeal to both Union and State Governments to debar the Government employees to head or be the member of any NGO in view of the recent reports that various NGOs were involved in scams and fraud.
Wani said that the Government officials after dereliction of their official duty for which they are paid lakhs of rupees as salaries devote their entire time in running the NGOs and some of them are earning a huge amount as profit. This way these Government employees are running the profit institutions and not the NGOs to serve the public for social cause.
Endorsing his views, Ram Paul a social activist from Jammu said that civil society will join hands for this noble cause as it has been seen that the maximum NGOs are being looked after by Government employees who have made it a second source of income. This way they cheat the Government and people by not remaining faithful to their Government job.
Paul said that many Government officials are seen not attending their duties but work for promotion of the NGOs run by them. This way they are looting the State exchequer as the Government has failed to take action against them.
Terming it a big menace, he said civil society will launch a State-wide movement against the same and presurize the Government to bring a law to ban the association of Government employees in NGOs. With the association of Government employees in NGOs they derelict their official duty with the result the work in Government offices suffers a lot, he added.
He said these employees have become a power center and they hardly care for their superiors in the offices by creating high influence in power corridors.
