| 101st Science Congress exposes Jammu's developmental woes | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Jammu, Feb 1: Much awaited 101st All India Science Congress to be held at Jammu University from February 3 to 7, 2014 has exposed preparedness of winter capital of the state in terms of holding of such big events as the Jammu city and its adjoining areas lacks infrastructure like hotels, Government guest houses and private guest house. As per the details available with "Early Times" nearly 15000 delegates from different parts of India and foreigners are scheduled to visit Science Congress during these five days and in order to accommodate, the local administration vacates all the state guest houses to accommodate the guest and the Prime Minister Security ahead of his schedule address at the Science Congress on February 3, 2014. Even though the Government's Hospitality and Protocol department has evacuated bureaucrats and private persons from Government control guest houses, but even than the Jammu University authorities faces difficult time to find a suitable accommodation for their guests. The Jammu did not only lack Government infrastructure, but also lacks good hotel facilities as bearing few good hotels, the city lacks infrastructure on the pattern of summer capital Srinagar where 2 lac tourists or guests could be accommodated in private guest houses and house boats alone. Moreover, many hotels in Jammu city were occupied by state run Estate Department for accommodation of secretariat employees. Even though the Government formulated a proposal of construction of at least 3000 flats for accommodation of secretariat employees a decade ago, but nothing was done till date. Now it is hardly matter whether the Jammu University will manage to accommodate the visiting guest but the question arises will the Government awake to address the problem before hosting any event like 101st All India Science Congress in future? |
