| Jammu not on priority list of NC-Cong coalition Govt | | Administrative units row | | Rustam Jammu, Feb 1: Will the NC-Congress coalition Government concede the long-pending demand of people of Jammu province for at least five more districts so that justice is delivered to them and administration brought at their doorsteps as in Kashmir valley? If sources close to the Cabinet Sub-Committee (CSC) on new administrative units are to be believed, and there is no reason why should they be not believed, then the answer is that the coalition Government will again leave the people of Jammu province high and dry the way the Ghulam Nabi Azad Government did in 2007 by rejecting the Wazir Commission Report that had recommended three new districts for Jammu province and one for Kashmir valley, as also by creating eight districts, for each for Jammu province and Kashmir valley. Sources close to the CSC revealed that the CSC, which met yesterday under the chairmanship of senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand for hours together to finalize its report virtually endorsed the controversial and anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh Mushtaq Gani panel's report on new administrative units but did not make it obligatory on the part of the Government to accept its suggestion that eight new districts be created in the state. Sources said the CSC did suggest the creation of eight districts in the state, five in Jammu province, including R S Pura and Akhnoor in Jammu district, Nowshera in Rajouri district, Billawar in Kathua district and one Muslim-majority district out of Reasi and Ramban districts, namely Gool-Arnas-Mahore-Gulabgarh; two districts in Kashmir valley, including one in Anantnag and another between Baramulla-Kupwara districts; and one more district in Ladakh between Leh district and Kargil district. The sources also revealed that the CSC made this suggestion on the pleas made by the various delegations which met with it in Jammu province, Kashmir valley and Ladakh region. In any case, everything will be in public domain sooner than later and if the sources close to the CSC proved correct, then the Congress would be at the receiving end in Jammu province where it has already become rather unpopular because of its Kashmir-centric approach. People of Jammu province consider the Congress as a political outfit that has harmed them more and they would surely avenge their defeat by inflicting a crushing defeat in the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. |
