| Lashkar militant killed in encounter at Kangan-Pulwama | | Fearing protests authorities impose curfew in town | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Feb 1: Police and security forces achieved a major breakthrough after they killed a militant in an encounter in the Kangan village of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Meanwhile, authorities imposed curfew in the Pulwama district while fearing protests from the people against the incident. Since the militant killed in the shoot-out was a resident of Charsoo-Awantipora authorities feared that people might come and carry out protests against the killing of the militant. The slain militant has been identified as Ajaz Ahmad Bhat and was associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba. Reports reaching here said that police and security forces cordoned off the Kangan village on Friday evening after receiving inputs that at least two militants are hiding in the village. Firing between the two sides continued during the whole night and in the morning one of the militants got killed. Deputy Inspector General, South Kashmir Range, Vijay Kumar told media persons at the site of encounter that police and security forces got information about the presence of two militants in the area. He said the encounter was successful since it led to elimination of the LeT militant without any collateral damage. "Police, CRPF and Army cordoned off the village and got engaged with the militants hiding in the village. There were inputs that two militants are hiding but only one among them was killed. It seems the second one has managed to escape during the night with the other engaging the cordon and search party," said the DIG. The DIG said curfew had to be imposed in the Pulwama district following apprehension that people might come out and carry out protests against the killing of the militant. He said in the past it was observed that people would pelt stones on police and security forces as and when a militant got killed. He said this was the reason that authorities were forced to impose restrictions in Pulwama district. Reports said that the entire Kangan village got rattled by the gun shots during the entire night. The trapped militant fired dozens of bullets towards the cordon and search with the same being retaliated. The encounter culminated in the morning with the killing of LeT militant who is said to be involved in many militancy related incidents in Pulwama district. The other militant managed to give police and security forces a slip by escaping from the site of encounter. A police spokesman while giving details said that last evening, on a specific information Police, 55 RR and CRPF launched a joint operation in Kangan area falling in the jurisdiction of Police Station Pulwama. The spokesman said that militant hiding in the village fired upon the joint party. "In the ensuing encounter one militant of LeT was killed. He has been identified as Ajaz Ahmad Bhat son of Jalal-u-Din resident of Chersoo, Awantipora. He was involved in number of militant activities including the one in Awantipora market in which two civilians including a lady were injured. Arms and Ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site," said the spokesman. |
