Sports
JAMMU, Feb 04: Unable to conduct domestic activities in last two sporting seasons, the Jammu and Kashmir Billiards and Snooker Association seems to be in trouble with the resignation of principal office bearers from the sports body.
In view of the internal bickering for the last two years or so, the principal office bearers, general secretary, Sheetal Gandotra and vice president, Kamal Rohmetra resigned from their respective posts in the recent past.
The copies of resignations have also been forwarded to the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India and the State Sports Council with intimation to act accordingly by these office bearers.
“It is true that general secretary has resigned from the post. Since the elections of the Association are due, the resignations are not going to affect the normal working,” said president of the Association, Siddharth Sharma, who happens to be Joint Secretary of the State Sports Council.
It has been learnt that both the principal office bearers of general secretary and president of the J&K Billiards and Snooker Association, following the fresh guidelines of the Government of India, are not eligible to contest for another term, following the.
“Both myself and general secretary, Sheetal Gandotra cannot contest for another term, the reason being we have already competed the maximum terms as principal office bearers. So, we have decided to hold the fresh elections by the end of this month or in the first week of March,” informed Siddharth Sharma.
When asked about domestic activities, Association president informed that the billiards tables were in poor condition at both the venues of MA Stadium and Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar.
“The tables have been made playable by investing Rs 3 lakh on repairs by the State Sports Council. Hopefully, the activities will be back soon after the new body will be in place, said Sharma.

JKCA honours Ranji squad for making it to knock-out stages

Sports
JAMMU, Feb 04: Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), in a function organized here today, felicitated the State Ranji Trophy team for making it to the knock-out stages of the prestigious event.
The team members and supporting staff were honoured by life president of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) and Union Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah. The team members presented with Rs one lakh cheque each and memento in recognition of their achievement.
Speaking to the media after receiving the honours, almost all the team members voiced their concern with regard to poor infrastructure in the state. When others were highlighting their plights, Rasool urged the JKCA to at least construct an indoor academy in Srinagar which will help the players get quality training, especially during winter season.
Dr Farooq Abdullah, as usual, went to the extend of making J&K team to finals of the Ranji Trophy knowing well that the JKCA has failed on all fronts, whether it was organizational set-up or adequate infrastructure.
He disclosed that JKCA was making efforts to engage former India captains Bishan Singh Bedi (who has already coached the state side) and Mohammed Azharuddin to guide the players of the state.

J&K lacks infrastructure: Rasool

Unhappy over the lack of cricket infrastructure, the international cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir, Parvez Rasool highlighted the poor playing facilities for the upcoming cricketers in the state.
Expressing his concern, young skipper said, “Those talented cricketers from Kashmir could not practice almost six months in a year, the reason being inclement weather in Valley and only playing ground in Jammu”.
Rasool, who was named in the Rest of India squad for Irani Cup that will take on Ranji champions, Karnataka at Bangalore from February nine, reiterated his stand that if cricketers from the state have to perform well at the national level, they need good infrastructure for at least practice.

JKCA needs to set records straight

No doubt, Parvez Rasool has been doing a great job by making his presence felt, but it was not for the first time that someone from the state has made it to the top level in Indian cricket. Rasool deserved appreciations but the JKCA must not forget those old warriors, who have already made the state proud. To mention a few, Surinder Singh Bagal and Abdul Qayoom have already achieved similar milestones.
However, the treasurer of the JKCA, Manzoor Wazir while appreciating the team’s performance repeatedly mentioned the achievement as something first ever. In fact, J&K had already achieved the feet of reaching the knock-out stages in 2001-02 under the leadership of former India captain, Ajay Jadeja. He also termed Parvez Rasool as first ever cricketer to be selected for Irani Trophy, which again needs a correction in JKCA ---records.
