Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 4: Wide spread protests in various parts of Kashmir continue against denial of a fair deal to these areas in sanctioning the administrative units. While the people of those areas where the Government created new administrative units are making merry and hailing the Government decision by taking out victory rallies, the neglected areas are taking out protest rallies and staging demonstrations.
There is a lot of resentment among the people in various parts of South Kashmir district of Anantnag who feel totally neglected in granting the administrative units and ignoring the genuine areas for grant of tehsil and Niabat status.
According to sources public resentment in on peak in the Shangus block of Kothar area in Anantnag district for not considering it for tehsil status. One of the oldest blocks of Anantnag district having a sizable number of population Shangus was a fit case for grant of tehsil status but the Cabinet Sub Committee failed to consider the area for reasons best known to the Government.
The people in the entire block are protesting for last three days since the Government announced creation of new administrative units in the State demanding a fair deal. The Achabal which is another important tourist destination of the area situated on both Shangus and Koernag -Kishtwar road was another fittest case for grant of tehsil status in case the authorities had any problem with Shangus but it too was not considered by the Government. The people in Achabal are on hunger strike as they term the decision as injustice with Shangus block.
They said ignoring these two important towns of the area Shangus block has been linked to mattan where a new tehsil was created which is not feasible as there is no direct road link from Shangus to Mattan and for the people of villages of Nowgam, Sombrun, Shangus, Achabal etc Anangang is more nearer and accessible than Shangus.
Likewise the people in Wayul township in erstwhile Kokernag teshil demand tehsil status. They are also on protest since then saying Wayul being a centrally located place deserves to tehsil headquarter instead of Larnoo the last village in the area.
Hillar is also one of the oldest township in the Kokernag tehsil which too could not get a fair deal while granting new administrative units, say the residents of the area. Hillar deserved to be a tehsil much earlier but it has always been ignored said Ghulam Rasool a social activist who was heading a mob protest in the area against injustice done to the people there.
Protests continue in Shabad area also where the people allege that deserving areas where ignored in granting tehsil and Niabats status. There is a tussle among the people in the localities of Damhal village and Akingam township as the CSC has recommended Niabat for either of the two.
While then people of Damhal demand that Niabat be given at their village the people of Akingam say that being the centre it deserves the Niabat.
The people in Soibug Pattan area of Baramulla district are also protesting against the CSC for ignoring them while people of Ajas in Bandipora district have also taken to streets for not granting the tehsil status to the area and instead selected a far-flung village Arigam.
Protests have also been reported from various localities of Ganderbal, Budgam, Pulwama and Kulgam districts of Kashmir Valley.
Commenting on the Government decision of creating the new administrative units PDP senior leader and additional district president Anantnag, Abdul Rahim Rather said that Opposition was not taken into confidence by Government. He demanded despite the pleas of PDP the Government failed to make Ganai Committee report public nor it revealed about the recommendations made by Cabinet Sub Committee.
Had the opposition been taken into confidence the aspirations of the people could have been also taken to consideration who feel neglected at present, he added.
