Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 4: Intensifying their ongoing struggle against the discrimination meted out to their respective areas, hundreds of people from Jandrah and adjoining villages today blocked important Kishenpur-Domail road link for several hours and demanded Sub-Divisional status to Jandrah. Agitating people held demonstrations by holding black flags and blamed the ruling National Conference-Congress coalition of subjecting them to great discrimination by not conceding their long pending demand for Tehsil status to Jandrah. Protestors from Jandrah, Dhan, Korga, Bhatyari, Kanyala, Nagola and several other Panchayats assembled at Panchayat Ghar Jandrah and raised slogans against the coalition government. They said their areas had been ignored by the Cabinet Sub-Committee while recommending new administrative new units. "As Nagrota and Dansal areas of Nagrota assembly segment have been given Tehsil status, we have been completely ignored by the government. The government didn't take into account the problems being faced by a large population of dozens of Panchayats falling under the erstwhile block Dansal. We appeal to the government for Sub-Divisional status to Jandrah so that justice is given to these neglected areas," the protestors said. Yesterday, thousands of people had blocked Mansar-Udhampur national highway for more than three hours in protest against the discrimination meted out to them by Cabinet Sub-Committee while recommending new administrative units in the state. Demanding Sub-Divisional status for Jandrah, the protestors said the area had got Niabat about 37 years ago and there had been a long pending demand for upgrading the existing Niabat to tehsil. "The irony is that the government has not followed any criteria in announcing new administrative units and the recommendation of Cabinet Sub-Committee was purely a politically motivated move. If the government has given Tehsil status to Dansal and Nagrota, Jandrah which is the central place in Nagrota assembly should be given Sub-Divisional status to deliver justice to the people," the speakers said.
Villagers have already removed the flags and the banners of various political parties from their respective areas and have threatened that they would not allow any political leader to hold rally in their areas until they get justice in form tehsil status to Jandrah. The protestors were led by Pritam Singh, Sarpanch Panchayat Halqa Dhan, Raghuvir Singh, Sarpanch, Panchayat Halqa Nagola, Anil Sharma, Sarpanch, Panchayat Halqa Jandrah and former Sarpanch, Kishori Lal.
