| Assembly session an opportunity for Jammu lawmakers to fight injustice | | | neha JAMMU, Feb 9: On Monday, a small duration winter session/budget session of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislature commences in the state's winter capital. The session takes place at a time when the general elections in the country are round the corner. The Election Commission of India can announce model code of conduct anytime from now and once it happens, no government in the country would be able to announce schemes calculated to induce voters to support the ruling parties. In other words, the time at the disposal of the central and the state governments is rather limited. This is the time when the opposition parties could exert maximum pressure on the governments and extract as many concessions for the people as possible. The role of Jammu legislators and ministers would be crucial in the current session of the state legislature. The role of opposition parties active in Jammu would be all the more crucial and the neglected people of Jammu province would keep a close watch on the Jammu lawmakers as they expect them to discharge their obligations towards them and create conditions in the Assembly and the Council conditions which force the Valley-centric ruling elite and its Jammu-based supporters in the Cabinet, Council of Ministers, Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council undo the past wrongs and compensate them for the losses they have suffered thus far at the hands of the Kashmir-dominated and Valley-centric successive governments in the state. The people of Jammu province would want their representatives in the Cabinet, Council of Ministers, Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council to force the ruling elite to (1) constitute delimitation commission so that they get due representation in the Assembly, (2) create five new districts in Jammu province, (3) promote tourism in Jammu province on the Kashmir lines, (4) remove disparities in the vital service sector between Jammu province and Kashmir region, (5) divide all the directorates, (6) establish more panchayats in Jammu province, (7) earmark funds for the construction of roads, bridges and power plants, (8) earmark funds for the construction of flyovers in the winter capital so that the city becomes livable, (9) create the required healthcare centres and (10) appoint an adequate number of teachers in the schools and colleges where the students are suffering due to lack of infrastructure and teachers. There are several issues in Jammu province which need to be addressed on a priority basis, but the people of Jammu province would be happy with their lawmakers in case they succeed in forcing the ruling elite to address the 10 above-mentioned specific issues. They must forget all the difference and come up to the expectations of their constituencies. |
