Credible sources in the Congress said that during their meeting with Prime Minister during his visit to Jammu last week, Congress leaders urged him to solve problems of these refugees once for all. They further urged the Prime Minister to exert pressure on the government to grant citizenship rights to refugees from West Pakistan. Sources said that Prime Minister has assured the Congress delegation that Union Government would take up this matter with State Government. "Central government has asked state Congress leadership to force State Government to prepare a detailed report about these refugees so that Centre would provide every possible assistance in this regard", sources said. Congress leaders have started showing their teeth to National Conference leadership on the issue of these refugees. Not only on West Pakistani refugees, Congress also started flexing its muscles on other issues related to Jammu because party has realized that threats of resignation was nothing but a pressure tactics. Today while celebrating victory of inclusion of 73rd amendment, Congress leaders hinted to now take up issue of West Pakistani refugees because party has realized that it is not difficult to force NC leadership to accept their issue. Issues of new administrative units and 73rd amendment have given a feeling to the Congress leadership that NC leadership could not dare to snap ties with the party at this juncture so it would be an appropriate opportunity to get the things done in their own ways. Early Times in its February 7 edition had already reported that issue of West Pakistani refugees is likely to rock coalition in the days to come because Congress has decided to get this issue solved before Lok Sabha elections. |
