| Smoking is injurious but not in Baramulla hospital! | | | early times report BARAMULLA, Feb 11: Despite the ban on smoking at public places including hospitals in the state, the real action in this respect is yet to be taken. People in general advocate for strict action against the people found smoking at places of public especially in hospitals. The 200 bedded District Hospital in this North Kashmir district is a glaring example of official neglect. The authorities here have let smokers have their way. To make matters worse some of the employees of the hospital are also found puffing cigarettes inside the hospital premises. "Every shopkeeper has to carry a sign board and the same should carry a message that smoking is injurious to health and it can't be sold to children up to 18 years of age," said attendants in GYNE/OBST, post operative ward number 2 of District Hospital. The attendants said that there is no difference between hospital and restaurants with smokers puffing cigarettes very easily without any restrictions. They said that nobody among the hospital administration has dared to ask the smokers not to smoke inside the hospital premises even if there are guidelines in this regard. The attendants stressed the need for enforcement saying that alone would act as a deterrent for the smokers and they would not smoke in the hospital premises. They said the hospital administration would get all the support from the attendants once the real action is taken in this regard. Sharing his views, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Baramulla, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Chalkoo said that smoking is prohibited in all public places including hospitals. Dr. Bashir said that the hospital wants to make the hospital smoke free. He said if anybody is found smoking in the hospital premises, law will take its own course. "We are planning to bring about a challan book so that we could penalize the smokers within the hospital premises. After that the smokers can be handed over to the police and hopefully this would make a difference. We are also planning to organize a programme on the enforcement part of the legislation but at the same time we cannot be too strict," said Dr. Bashir. Javed Ahmad, a medico said that increase in excise is the sole solution for making prohibition of smoking especially for students and youngsters a reality. Dr. Javed said that this step may lead to a situation where the younger generation quit smoking and live a healthy life.
