Jammu, Feb 21: Expressing his anguish over the inability of Jammu University authorities to start work on the Udhampur campus, Panthers party MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia on Thursday demanded to withdraw the autonomous status of the Jammu University and bring it directly under the Ministry of Higher Education.
Mankotia rued that the University had been allocated Rs. 5 crore by the state government and another 18 crores by the University Grant Commission; yet, it had not expended a single rupee in years for the construction of its off campus at Udhampur.
"There is no accountability and the University authorities are only interested in contesting elections. University must be brought directly under the Ministry of Higher Education" the MLA said.
Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone responding to the concern expressed by the MLA however admitted that the Ministry of Higher Education had a limited role to play in the University administration due to their autonomous character, but assured to put forth the concerns of the Member in the meeting of the University Council.
