Town remains shut over Changa abduction
Gunmen kill Sopore youth

BARAMULLA, Feb 21: Un-identified gunmen struck in the apple rich town of Sopore in this North Kashmir district and gunned down a civilian who was returning from a Masjid after offering evening prayers in the Krankshivan locality of the area.
Reports said that Waseem Mehraj Malla son of Mehraj-ud-din Malla resident of Naseembagh locality of Krankshivan-Sopore came under a volley of bullets from unidentified gunmen at 6:40 while coming out of the Masjid after offering evening prayers in his locality. Waseem succumbed to his injuries on spot.
The assailants wearing masks could not be identified. The killing of Waseem adds to the list of civilian killings that has been going on in the different localities of Sopore area over the past few years.
The killing led to panic in the area and a pall of gloom descended on the Malla family as soon as news of Mehraj's death reached them. Meanwhile, for the second consecutive day Sopore area observed shut-down against the abduction of a youth.
The youth identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Changa, was kidnapped during the intervening night of January 29 and 30 by unknown masked gunmen from his house in Hyder Colony. Almost three weeks have passed since then but the whereabouts of Mushtaq are yet to be known.
The authorities had deployed heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces to maintain law and order and thwart any untoward incident.
Scores of people in the Arampora locality came out and staged protests against the abduction of a youth by unidentified gunmen. They demanded swift action in tracing out the youth.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Abdul Qayoom told Early Times that police is trying its best to identify the abductors and rescue the youth from their clutches. The SP said that a case has already been filed and FIR 18/2014 under section 365 RPC has been lodged at Police Station Sopore. Station House officer (SHO) Sopore, Mohammad Rafiq said that a team has already been constituted and the same is closely monitoring the whole episode.
The SHO exuded confidence that the case will be cracked soon and Mushtaq would be rescued. In the meantime, DIG North Kashmir today constituted a SIT to trace Mushtaq.
"On the directions of DIG NKR a special investigation team was constituted under the close supervision of SDPO Sopore for speedy investigation of the case. During investigation it surfaced that the individual has been abducted by the militants. Efforts are on to trace the kidnapped person," said a police spokesman. In a related incident a youth identified as Abdul Khaliq Ganai son of Mohammad Akbar Ganai was abducted by unknown gunmen in Tarhama area of Sopore on Wednesday night.
The youth was on way to home when gunmen intercepted him and whisked him away, sources said.
