| GMCs in JK facing acute shortage of faculty, doctors | | | Bashir Assad
Jammu, Feb21: Government today informed the Legislative Assembly that Government Medical Colleges of Jammu and Srinagar have been reeling under shortage of 433 faculty members. In reply to questions of Professor Chaman Lal Gupta and Abdul Rehman Veeri, the government said that 278 posts of faculty members have been lying vacant in Government Medical College, Srinagar and 155 in the Government Medical College, Jammu. In GMC, Srinagar out of sanctioned strength of 519 Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers, 241 are in place and 278 posts are lying vacant. Similarly, against sanctioned strength of 358 in the Government Medical College, Jammu , 203 are in place and 155 posts are lying vacant. Likewise out of sanctioned strength of 570 gazette officers in GMC Srinagar, 430 are filled and 140 posts are vacant while as in GMC Jammu, out of the total sanctioned strength of 450 other gazetted officers 347 are in place while as 103 are vacant. As for the paramedical staff is concerned out of the sanctioned strength of 1873 posts in this category in GMC Srinagar, 1392 are in place and 481 are vacant while as in GMC Jammu out of sanctioned strength of 1836 paramedical staff, 1386 are in place 450 are vacant. The situation in health department is no more different from the Medical Education department. In Jammu Health Services out of sanctioned strength of 1973 doctors, 1107 are in place and 866 are vacant. In Health Services Kashmir, out of sanctioned strength of 2256 doctors 1402 are in place and 854 are vacant. Together in Health and Medical education departments out of the total sanctioned strength of 6474 doctors in the state, 4056 are in place 2418 are vacant. As for the paramedical staff in both health and medical educations departments is concerned, out of the total 19726 paramedics, 15389 are in place and 4337 are vacant. Pertinently the Medical Council of India had some time back threatened to derecognize a number of departments in the Medical colleges in Srinagar and Jammu in case the state Government failed to fill a large number of vacant posts within the stipulated time period. Medical Council of India orders derecognition of those faculties or departments that face paucity of teaching staff and the basic infrastructure. According to these sources there are about though there are around one lakh vacant posts in different Government departments in Jammu and Kashmir but the paucity of doctors in the two medical colleges does not only affect medicare system but also teaching programme in the two medical colleges. Government circles said that as far as the medicare facilities in the rural dispensaries and health centres besides the district hospitals were concerned it was quite poor because of shortage of doctors and paramedical staff. |
