| Defeated candidates 'pitching' for defeated lot in BJP | | Coterie doesn't want to weaken its monopoly | | Et Report
Jammu, Feb 21 : As the time for announcing candidates for Parliamentary polls draws nearer, support strategy within BJP is witnessing strange overtures even from senior most leaders of the party with respect to canvassing strongly for probable candidates for the two seats from Jammu province. A group of leaders who are seen largely as a 'coterie' is busy these days in making hectic efforts at quarters that matter in vouching for mandate to those in whose projection they see their own interests being served rather than looking at the winnable prospects of the party or candidate. Sources said there is a group of leaders who are senior in the hierarchy and have no direct stakes in LS polls. Though they have contested polls unsuccessfully in the past both for Assembly as well as LS polls, this time they are not in reckoning for a couple of reasons for getting ticket from the central leadership in contesting the polls, at least not for Parliamentary elections. However they are pitching high for final choice of those who too are defeated candidates in the previous elections, sources said adding that this is being seen as a part of the strategy that in no way can prove beneficial for the party. As the party for a couple of reasons is claiming victory on the two seats of Jammu province, which is not a far fetched possibility in the present political atmosphere viz-a-viz position of rival parties in the constituencies covered under the two seats, this coterie within the party is picking up threads on wrong notes by strongly favouring the candidates as final choice who have contested a number of times in the previous elections. Sources said they are doing it deliberately not to lose control and monopoly over the affairs of the party in many ways. In other words they do not actually want any new candidate with a good image to jump the electoral fray who may be having acceptance among the voters and therefore could help in having strong winnability factor. Since they have contested elections in the past unsuccessfully, they are supporting the name of those who too fall in the category of defeated candidates, no matter by a thin margin or on account of whatever political reason. Since atag of defeated candidates is still attached with them, this coterie within the party wants continuance of this tag on others too as they know it well the names which they are vouching for will not emerge victorious for certain reasons this time again, sources said. This projection is however doing more harm than any good to the party prospects, said the sources adding that workers in various constituencies which matter for the party are not quite enthusiastic with the strategy this group is adopting in pressing the Central leadership. Workers who are disheartened for some names in circulation despite certain political factors in favour of BJP this time are not upbeat for kickstarting the campaign nor pushing ahead the electoral momentum on account of flawed approach of the coterie for LS polls. |
