| Azad wanted 'show' organised by Congress, left function early | | Unveiling of Indira Gandhi's statue | | ET Report JAMMU, Feb 22: Jammuites began their day today with almost all main roads choked with traffic, thanks to a VVIP function in the heart of the city that led to chaotic condition at many points due to diversion of vehicles from main roads on the crossing to alternative routes. The gala 'bandobast' was all for unveiling of the statue of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the tallest Congress leader at Indira Chowk in Jammu city. Notwithstanding the highly 'spruced up' affairs, the chief guest of the occasion Ghulam Nabi Azad-Union Health Minister made almost a formal presence and left in a huff, much early than the function could have been gracefully wrapped up. What made Azad angry and why did he leave without waiting a while for vote of thanks by the concerned authorities....? Sources said that even though the function was organised by Jammu Municipal Corporation, senior Congress leader had consented to be the chief guest of the function for the sole reason of the fact that the statue installed at the Chowk was that of no less dignitary than Congress' tallest leader Indira Gandhi. However, he had desired the function including the rest of the programme proceedings to have been convened and handled by the Congress party, sources said. Though some Ministers and senior party functionaries shared presence at the function and Ghulam Nabi Azad addressed the gathering in capacity of the party stalwart, this was all that was went to the party credit. Rest everything was carried on by the official organisers, JMC. Sources said with JMC having managed the entire show -from welcome ceremony by the school children to proceedings , including the main event of statue unveiling and address by the chief guest (which was left to Azad) and the concluding ceremony -all by its own, this made Congress leadership unhappy who took it as 'hijacking' of the political show. However, even though senior Ministers, MP, legislators of party made themselves available in the function, PCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz was conspicuous by his absence. Sources also said since Ghulam Nabi Azad himself wanted the political part of the show to have been conducted by the party itself, what unfolded at the venue of the function irked him to the extent that soon after he completed his address he left hurriedly amidst an announcement that vote of thanks ceremony was to follow shortly. Pertinently, the statue has been installed by JMC and the function was officially organised by it with proper invitation through cards sent by it. JMC had hired the services of an announcer with Radio Kashmir Jammu to conduct the proceedings of the show. |
