| Security forces achieve major success by killing 24 militants in Jan-Feb | | Likely influx of Taliban after withdrawal of NATO troops' | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Feb 22: General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lieutenant General, Gurmit Singh today said that security forces have achieved tremendous success in their anti-militancy operations with more than 20 militants getting killed in encounters across Kashmir since the onset of 2014. Talking to media persons here, Lt Gen Singh said that 24 militants were killed since January 1, 2014 with 26 weapons being recovered from the slain militants. He said that 11 militants including the district commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) operating in Sopore in North Kashmir for the last 12 years have been killed by security forces.The GOC said that army has apprehended 13 local militants including the Divisional Commander of the HM. He said security forces have tasted success much early this year as compared to the previous year. He added that in 2013 the first militant casuality took place in April with security forces already great tasting great success this year despite that two months are yet to be completed. Regarding the infiltration attempts by militants from across the border, Lt Gen Singh said that army has put in place proper mechanism in order to counter the infiltration from across the Line of Control. He said the army is ready to meet any eventuality on this front adding that they are ready to face any challenge as soon as snow starts to melt on border passes or near them.The GOC said that army and other security agencies have complete control on the internal security of the state with the graph of militancy decreasing with the passage of time. He said the militants and their sympathizers will make desperate attempts in coming months especially during Lok Sabha and assembly elections to disturb peace in valley."We are ready to face any such security challenge both at the internal level and also at the borders. The infiltration attempts were made in the past and these attempts are expected to increase in the coming months especially during elections. There are reports that there may be possible influx of Taliban from Afghanistan after the withdrawal of NATO forces," said Lt Gen Singh. The GOC said that the army is also very much ready to face the challenge emanating after the pullout of NATO forces from Afghanistan. He however accepted that it will be a herculean task to provide free and fair environment during the upcoming parliamentary and assembly elections. "The army is closely monitoring the security situation within the country and also the security environment in neighboring countries. There is genuine concern within the establishments after the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan. We are also maintaining a watch on these developments. We are well capable to maintain law and order within the country and would defeat all such attempts," said Lt Gen Singh. |
