| Transporters fleece passengers in Kishtwar, nexus with police alleged | | | | KISHTWAR, Feb 22 : People living in rural areas of Kishtwar District accuse transport department and traffic police of failing to control transporters from charging the fare from passengers as per the approved rate list. While talking to Early Times, several people living in rural areas of Kishtwar District like Bhunzwah, Thakrie, Chatroo, Chingham, Sarthal, Saroori Patimhala, Padder, Nagsini, Keshwan and other remote areas of Kishtwar District complained of transporters charging passenger fares at 400 to 500% exorbitant rates than the fare fixed by the government. I even sometime pay Rs. 200 as a fare from Thatri to Nali or Jawalapur-Bhunzwah, said one Sanjeet Kumar of Bhunzwah. He said that people not only suffer due to shortage of transportation facility, but also on account of poor road connectivity. He said that transporters plying their vehicles on said roads are blackmailing the poor passengers who have been left with no other chance except to pay the fare as per the demand of the driver of the vehicle. He said that officials of transport department and traffic police are well aware about this practice and added that the authorities are turning blind eye towards the suffering of common people. He demanded for regular SRTC bus service for Bhunzwah area. Another Youth Raj Kumar of Thakrie Kishtwar expressed similar view. He said that the work on various road projects in Chatroo area is going on at slow pace. He said that many roads constructed by the PMGSY department are in poor condition as a result of which people of the area suffered a lot. He demanded speedup of construction work so that the road connectivity in rural areas of Kishtwar District will improve. Imtiyaz Ahmed, a student traveling frequently on Kishtwar-Jammu National Highway said that the reports of charging extra fare from people is not only confined to rural areas of Kishtwar District, but added that the similar practice is in place all along the National Highway where the bus owners as well as the Sumo/Tavera vehicle also charged extra fare from the passenger. "I paid Rs. 500 as a Sumo fare from Jammu to Kishtwar--- on return I paid Rs. 250 as bus fare--- which is Rs. 100 as compared to the passenger fare paid by him last year" said Imtiyaz Ahmed. He said that no matador plying on various routes in Jammu city displayed the rate list and is charging as per their will. He said that traffic police and traffic authorities are hand in glow with the transporter causing inconvenience to the people. He said that overloading is also a major concern, particularly in hilly areas of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban District. He urged up on the authorities to keep regular check on transporters charging exorbitantly from passengers. |
