2/26/2014 11:01:38 PM

Abodh Sharma
JAMMU, Feb 26: The State Government today announced an amendment in the order issued by the Cabinet recently, forbidding the use of red beacons on the official vehicles of the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and the State Advocate General.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mir Saiffullah told the State Assembly here today that the permission to use red beacons on official vehicles for the three has been withdrawn.
Cutting across party lines, legislators, including those from the ruling National Conference the opposition People’s Democratic Party had on Tuesday protested the Cabinet decision.
The issue was raised again in the State legislative Assembly by Panthers MLA Harsh Dev Singh, who argued that the LA had violated the warrant of precedence it had passed in allowing the legislators to use red beacon. "It is misinterpretation of the warrant of precedence," Singh lamented.
Reacting to the concern expressed by him, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Mir Saiffullah said, "the Government had decided to strictly adhere to the guidelines of the Supreme Court in this regard and hence, no one below the Ministers of State shall be authorized to use beacon light, implying that the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and the State Advocate General shall not be eligible for the red beacon atop their vehicles.
Earlier, CPI (M) M Y Tarigami regretted that a section of the Press has misrepresented the essence of the House and the legislators had not demanded Lal Batti as reported. "We actually refused Lal Batti and said No to VIP Culture," Tarigami said. He also regretted the statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, wherein he had termed the Lal Batti demand of the legislators as laughable. "This House is not laughable," Tarigami asserted.
