| Scores of illegal structures to become legal following nod by legislature | | Violators all set to run away Scott free | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Feb 26: The Assembly elections in the state may be months away but they have already impacted the overall developmental scenario in both the Jammu and Kashmir regions. The legalization of illegal structures that have come up in the twin capital cities of Jammu and Kashmir has already given an impression that everything is fair in politics more so electoral politics. This is all set to disturb the overall balance of capital cities of the State. Sources told Early Times that in the Srinagar city scores of illegal structures have come up in the violation of Municipal Laws. All these are set to be legalized following the smooth passage of concerned bill by both Houses of Legislature. Most of these illegal structures are owned by 'influential' people who are very close to the corridors of power. "Tremendous deviations have taken place across the length and breadth of the summer capital of the State. Given the fact that there would be moratorium on the demolition of illegal structures up to March 31, 2015 it is quite possible that the violators would run away scott free. This would set a bad precedence with violations not being ruled out in future as well," said sources. Sources said that the Government announcement that penalty would be imposed on violators is a mere eye-wash adding that negligible fine would be imposed on violators. They said the Government move is aimed at giving an impression that the coalition Government cares for the welfare and well-being of the common masses. "On the Pantha Chowk-Parimpora stretch of Baramulla-Srinagar-Jammu highway dozens of illegal structures have come up over the past couple of decades. No action has been whatsoever has been taken against the owners of these structures. Some of the illegal structures are of National Conference Ministers or legislators with the rest of the people who are very close to corridors of power," said sources. Sources said that most of the illegal structures that have come up in the heart of city or outskirts are also owned by people who are either members of legislature or enjoying close rapport with the people in the Government. They said that inaction against the big fish is likely to give a chance to lesser known people to violate the municipal laws with impunity. "As the political parties are in need of donation at the time of elections how can they take cudgels with the donors? This close relationship between the political leaders and the so called elite business class has wrecked havoc with the municipal laws being trampled like anything. If the Government would have been serious then they should have taken action against the violators of law," said the sources. The sources said that violations of many times have come up in the summer capital adding that how much penalty would be imposed on these 'heavy weights'. They said that action in the coming days alone would spell out the 'seriousness' on part of the State Government in this respect. |
