| Army averse to re-opening of Pathribal case | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 26: The Defence Ministry is unlikely to reopen the Pathribal encounter case. Ministry officials after consultations with the Army have decided not to reverse its decision. According to sources, senior Army officials had told Defence Minister that decision to close the case has been taken by following all steps and opening a case would amount to turning down the due process of law followed by the Army. "The case was taken over by the Army as per the direction of the Supreme Court. All legal formalities were followed to the extent that a team was sent to the Valley to get account of the witnesses. So there is no room for opening of the case," said a senior Army official posted at Army headquarters in Delhi. The Chief Minister has been clamoring for reopening of the case. He had even discussed the issue with the Prime Minister. "PMO had sought views of the Defence Minister on it. It was categorically told that there is no room to change the decision taken by the Army," said the senior Army official. According to the sources, the Army in its communication to the PMO had also stated that it had followed the due process of law in Machil encounter and so it's decision in this account can't be doubted. Source said the Chief Minister is raking up the issue for its own presumed political benefits but in the process is damaging the institution of Army. Army had also told the political establishments that this sort of public posturing by the Chief Minister of the State is not doing any service to the Army. "Indian Army is one of the best armies in the world with the well established institution. By doubting its credentials the Chief Minister is giving leverage to the anti-national and separatists to criticise the Army, which is not acceptable from the political leader who had taken oath in the constitution," said a senior Army official. |
