People of Jammu should forget Chief Minister's position
NC and CM's post

JAMMU, Feb 26: Something is patently wrong with the National Conference (NC) leaders and others of their ilk. They have no respect for the democratic norms and sentiments of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region. They have turned so arrogant that they openly ridicule those in Jammu who suggest that this region should also be considered at par with Kashmir as far as the coveted post of Chief Minister is concerned. It was none other than NC working president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who had on Monday ridiculed the suggestion to this effect in the presence of so many leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister, and that too in Jammu, winter capital of the State. He left none in any doubt that the post of Chief Minister would always be with the Kashmiri ruling elite and the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region have no other option but to accept the Kashmiri-controlled regime. So much so, he indirectly questioned the very administrative credentials of the Jammu leadership and accused them of creating inter-regional tensions as well as creating bad blood between Ladakh and Kashmir. He directly charged these who advocate Chief Ministership for Jammu with playing vote-bank politics. It is a different chapter that he and others of his ilk in his party and outside still claim that they believe in the principle of justice and equity and do not differentiate between the regions and the communities and ask the people of Jammu and Ladakh to give them the mandate to (mis)rule the State so that they could exploit the people of these two regions and enrich Kashmir's economy at their cost. If the Chief Minister said what he should not have respecting the sensitivities of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, a number of other Kashmiri lawmakers, separatists and the so-called opinion makers in the Valley during the past 25 days openly opposed certain decisions on the ground that they were anti-Kashmir and pro-Jammu and pro-Ladakh. They did it in the Legislative Assembly and outside.
In the Assembly they opposed the installation of a few more ventilators in the Government hospitals, implementation of certain Centrally-Sponsored Schemes and creation of a few more Public Health Centres (PHCs) in Jammu province. And outside the Assembly in Kashmir they opposed the Cabinet decision on new administrative units. So much so, they said that the Cabinet decision was not just pro-Jammu and pro-Ladakh, but also said that the decision was nothing but a conspiracy hatched by New Delhi to change the State's demographic profile, weaken the Kashmiri cause and establish the domination of Jammu over administrative and political institutions.
Not just this, one of the Kashmir-based lawmakers asked New Delhi to quit Kashmir, saying it is giving preferential treatment to Jammu. One Congress lawmaker from Kashmir did not demand expulsion of New Delhi from the state, but shared the view that State Government neglected Kashmir as far as the issue of creation of PHCs was concerned. Such was their pressure that the State Government had to appoint a House Committee to look into the complaint that Kashmir was discriminated against.
What does all this show? The answer is not far to seek. It is no wonder then that the inter-regional tensions and animosities are assuming alarming proportions with each passing day.
