Early Times Report

Kathua, Mar 9: In order to strengthen the empowerment of women on all fronts, "Mahila Adhikar Sangathan" celebrated the 8th of March as International Women's Day with full enthusiasm and zeal here today. On the occasion large number of people from all walks of life made their presence and speeches and poems were also presented in favour of women's upliftment. While speaking on the occasion, the state president of the Sangathan Santosh Khajuria threw light on the historical background of the day On 8th of March 1857, women working in clothing and textile factories in New York City, in the United States, staged a protest. They were fighting against inhumane working conditions and low wages. The police attacked the protestors and dispersed them. Years later, again in March, these women formed their first labour Union to protect themselves and to gain some basic rights in the workplace. She further highlighted that in India particularly, life of women is far below the normal HDI (Human Development Index) criterion. There are numerous untold stories full of agony and misery about women. Ranging from domestic turbulence to the lateral consequences of the ongoing turmoil across the country, women continue to be at the ultimate risk. In times of war and peace, women (especially rural folk) are among the worst sufferers and they have undergone severe psychological/ emotional traumas, she added. The General Secretary Young BAR Association, Vinesh Kazmi also addressed the occasion and focused that celebrating women's day should be aimed at making firm resolve to redress their grievances.
