'School closure Information glitch' ends up in mess in valley
3/12/2014 12:05:47 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 11: For the second day the state government made a mess of the situation that emerged following heavy snowfall across the Kashmir valley courtesy delay in the announcement of closure of educational institutions which did not go well with the students and teachers of government and private schools and many reached to schools despite hostile weather conditions.
Ideally Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Shailender Kumar should have made the announcement about closure early morning but that was not to be. Sadly enough it was at about 10:15 AM when there was an announcement on Radio Kashmir, Srinagar that all the schools (middle, high and higher secondary) would remain closed in Kashmir valley on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"By the time the announcement was made a good portion of students and teachers had left for their schools in both government and private sector, reports from various localities in valley said. "As valley has witnessed fresh snowfall for the last two days, the parents as well as teachers had set their radios on just to hear an announcement regarding the closure of schools till the snow siege continues, said an aggrieved student.
As it happened yesterday also that schools up to 8th standard only were asked to observe the order, but it was flouted by the leading schools of the Kashmir valley. Now when the snow has accumulated in great amount, while the snowfall continues unexpectedly, there should have been no hesitation in taking and announcing the decision about closure of all educational institutions.
'Early Times' came across many such students, struggling through the knee height snowfall which threatens to break all the records. As they were asked to express their feelings, one of the students briefly questioned, "Aren't the chief minister and many of his ministers from Kashmir? Don't they have sympathetic heart? If so why have they subjected students to such cruel treatment?
"I turned on the radio early morning to get updates about the snow and it's after effects. The first news item in the morning bulletin was about the snowfall. The news announcer only gave figures about the heavy snowfall across the valley, said parents of a student further adding, "news reader only mentioned that control rooms have been established and also gave the numbers of help-lines started by the administration. He however lamented that the radio informed that roads are slippery, national highway is closed and there is threat of avalanches as well but no news about closure of schools (which was aired much late reasons better known to authorities).
Meanwhile teaching fraternity is of the opinion whenever such situations arise, children/students should be given respite by announcing holidays but well in time.
