Jammu, Mar 11: Inducted in the party by the National Conference provincial president Devendra Rana despite resentment within the rank and file, Rajiv Chunni, a refugee leader after floating an amalgam of all refugee organizations the previous day, indirectly called upon the refugee community not to vote for the National conference, the party he joined amidst great pomp and show.
Chunni, the chairman of the SOS international, an organization of West Pakistan refugees, embarrassed the National conference and in particularly the provincial president of the party when while addressing a press conference after floating an umbrella organization of all refugee groups said that it was time to teach all political parties who had befooled the community a befitting lesson. "No political party was concerned about the plights of refugees, who have been suffering for the last several decades due to insensitive and step motherly treatment meted out to them by the successive Governments in centre as well as State" alleged Chunni, indirectly accusing the State government, led by the party he himself joined recently of 'befooling' the refugee community.
Casting aspersion on the intent of his own party, Chunni alleged that the community was not convinced over State Government and Congress leaders' claims of preparing a rehabilitation package for the refugees.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chunni had led a delegation of refugees to meet the chief minister Omar Abdullah and had assured support of the community in the parliamentary elections.
While Chunni's utterances have left Rana red faced, many within the party have started questioning his induction in the party at the very outset. "We had warned the party leaders against his induction because of his dubious record and his affiliation with ideologically opposed parties" an office bearer of the National Conference said pleading anonymity. |
