Party quitting spree, joining rivals, contesting polls independently
J&K for the first time witnessing none of above situations
3/25/2014 12:10:00 AM
Jammu, Mar 24: Election time is the season for changing parties and loyalties too by even die hard supporters of any party-all for the sake of reassuring political gains swiftly. Come elections, this phenomenon is seen with leaders of all parties which is guided by the sole motive of grabbing 'opportunities'. In some cases quitting the parties and joining rival political platforms by even stalwarts is a move seen after they are denied tickets for contesting elections. This is the scenario witnessed with almost all parties at the national level in many states as well. But J&K becomes an exception so far, at least for the Lok Sabha elections where no such move has been seen by the disgruntled, disappointed leaders who were strong contenders for contesting polls, yet denied the opportunity for different reasons in different parties. Despite being angry and annoyed with central leadership or high command , no leader quit the party nor joined any new one.
It is perhaps for the first time that no big nor any lesser known leader has changed the political sides, not withstanding the fact that aspirants were denied tickets in the last minute decision making process which came more like a shock for many. This happened at least in two national parties, BJP and Congress where aspirants were in line seeking tickets from the high command but their expectations got washed away in a spur of moment when it was denied. It first happened in BJP when the announcement of tickets for two seats of Jammu left many leaders shell shocked. The strong contender like Prof Nirmal Singh for Doda-Udhampur seat apparently got upset and remained off from the election scene for quite some time. His distancing from the poll hustle and bustle even fuelled speculations that he would quit the BJP any time. Even the rumours turned so wild that at one point of time it was learnt in the political gossip that he would join ideologically
opposed parties. However, till this date this move has not been seen from his end nor are any indications or the reason that he will do it now. Similar speculations , rather self circulated rumour ran for some days for two other senior most leaders of BJP who were also strong contenders for Jammu-Poonch seat. It was again a speculation which got vanished with party gaining momentum for campaign. A similar situation arose with Congress when Lal Singh was denied ticket. This move by the Congress high command finally put at rest the speculations and guessing game for stalwart Ghulam Nabi Azad contesting the elections but at the same time sparked speculations about Lal Singh. However, nothing of the sort happened. Even with other parties which have lesser stakes yet contenders are many, no changing the political lines has been seen in J&K so far . The adage politics makes strange bedfellows is not working, perhaps for the first time in J&K.
