| Congress' revolts in Kashmir against NC | | Bad omen for Beg, Sharifuddin | | Rustam
JAMMU, Mar 24: The ruling National Conference (NC), which was already not standing on a strong wicket in Kashmir and facing a very tough challenge from the People's democratic Party (PDP), is in for a major trouble in the Valley. Infact, bulk of the local Congress leaders in the Anantnag and Baramulla Lok Sabha constituencies have revolted against the sitting NC MPs Mehboob Beg and Sharifuddin Shariq and declared that they would not support Beg and Shariq. They have said that they could not wok for the success of the NC as it only helped the NC leaders, workers and supporters and ignored to the hilt the Congress. As a matter of fact they have said that the NC leadership has weakened the Congress. It is obvious that the PDP would be the immediate beneficiary in Kashmir province, where it has already captured much of the NC's political place. It would not be out of place to mention here that majority of local Congress leaders were opposed to the NC's suggestion on pre-poll alliance with the NC and their argument was the same: A pre-poll alliance with the NC would harm the Congress. A number of Congress delegations had approached central leaders to persuade them not to enter into a pre-poll alliance with the NC, but with no result. The Congress high command, which was under the influence of Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, rejected the suggestion to oblige the NC leadership much to the chagrin of the local Congress leadership. It would be difficult for the JKPCC leadership to persuade the local Congress leaders in Kashmir to review their stand. And, why should they review their stand? After all, they have suffered at the hands of the Nc and the NC-led coalition government for more than five years now. Now that the local Congress leaders in Kashmir have made it loud and clear that they would not work for the success of atleast two NC candidates seeking election to the Lok Sabha, the question which could be asked is: Will the NC leaders from Jammu will retaliate and work against the Congress candidates in Jammu province? This question assumes significance when viewed in the context of the Congress' revolt in Kashmir. There are reasons to believe that the NC leaders from Jammu province could also pay back in the same coin. The possibility of internal sabotage just cannot be overruled. In any case, it can be said that all is not well in the NC-Congress coalition and it is obvious that it is advantage to the PDP in Kashmir and BJP in Jammu. That the NC leadership is mortally afraid of the PDP and the BJP could be seen from the relentless anti-PDP and anti-BJP campaign unleashed by it. |
