| Post ISC meet Jammu hoteliers yet to receive balance payments | | Accuse JU of 'sitting on' their rightful dues | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, Mar 24: Either it could be described as 'dilly-dallying' tactics or the deliberate attempt of Jammu University administration to block pending dues of as many as 98 hoteliers, who are denied their payments against the rooms booked at their respective hotels for the stay of the participants of the 101st Indian Science Congress (ISC) held at Jammu University (JU) from February 2 to 7. While narrating their plight some of the hoteliers including Jatinder Singh, Visheshwar Gupta, Jagdeep Singh and Raman Sharma informed Early Times that approximately 2000 rooms in 98 different hotels were booked in Jammu city to facilitate the stay of ISC delegates. "We have received only paltry amount as advances before the commencement of the ISC. The event got over on February 7 and since then we are awaiting our payments to the tune of Rs 1.25 crore. It is more than one and a half month now but the Jammu University authorities are delaying the balance amount on one pretext or the other. We are fed up with the false assurance of the University administration," said a hotelier, Jatinder Singh. "All the hoteliers were approached by the Jammu University authorities for booking the rooms on approved rates. We offered the rooms on competitive rates since Governor of the State had made a fervent appeal to the hoteliers that being a part of hospitality industry we should support a prestigious event like ISC which is being held in Jammu for the very first time," he added. After rates get an approval from the competent authority, the advance payment at the rate of Rs 10000, Rs 20000 and Rs 50000 were made to the hoteliers and that too by approaching each one of them individually. At that time, the hoteliers were assured that the remaining payment will be made at the time of check outs but more than a month has passed and not even a single penny was issued to the hapless hoteliers. "When we approached the University authorities after few days of the culmination of the event to seek our payments, they told us that balance payments will be made after March 1, however, when re-approached after the deadline, the subordinate staff of the University started to make lame excuses for the delay and asked us to wait for another week," said Singh. "There is certainly some hanky-panky going on as the University has already received the funds earmarked for making payments for lodging and other purpose.. They are lingering on the process of making remaining payments citing some paper works," he added. Running from pillar to post, the hoteliers today finally met the Vice Chancellor of Jammu University, Dr Mohan Pal Singh Ishar, who assured them that by coming Friday the payments will be disbursed among all the hoteliers. "Today we had a cordial meeting with the Vice Chancellor, who promised that the payments will be made by March 28," said Singh. |
