Kashmir highway closed due to landslides, triggered by rains
3/25/2014 12:13:34 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 24 : The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed due to landslides, triggered by heavy rains since early this morning. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and essentials for Kashmir valley, which left Jammu this morning are stranded at several. Official sources said that traffic was suspended on the highway this afternoon following landslides and shooting stones at Penthal and other places due to heavy rains.
However, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintainance of the highway have already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides. But, sources said, continued rain had badly hit the road clearance operation. They said hundreds of vehicles are stranded on other side of the Penthal. As soon as shooting stones stopped and landslides are cleared, vehicles will be allowed to move towards Srinagar, they added. One-way traffic is plying on the highway since December last year to avoid traffic jam as the road is damaged at several places.
