Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 25 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, like other Congress leaders, has now joined the party chorus of making Cong vice-president Rahul Gandhi the next Prime Minister, even while he himself is reluctant and the party is likely to get drubbing in the coming parliamentary elections.Speaking at Kathua on the filing of nomination papers of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar said : " NC-Cong alliance will win all the six seats in the State and will make sure that Rahul Gandhi becomes the next Prime Minister of India." Omar by joining the chorus of making Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister of India has tried to ensure that he keep himself in the good books of the Cong high command so that he can have his way with the State unit of the party. Omar had earlier said that his future lies with the Cong led UPA. But then he gradually tried to shift his support. In an interview recently he even went to the extent of saying he can even support Third front from outside so that BJP doesn't come to power but also added the important rider by not completely ruling out alliance with the BJP. The Chief Minister knows for now that his political fortune hangs on his political equation with the Congress , especially with the Cong vice-president, as he is the person who has standing guard to his chief ministerial chair. Omar knows that the moment Rahul makes shift in his political stand with respect to him, his political days will be over. It's for this reason that he has been consistently praising Rahul Gandhi and it's only after the intervention of the Cong vice-president that 73rd amendment was approved and incorporated though the state unit had been crying it for the last three-year. However, the Omar's political fortunes also depend on then poll outcome. If the Cong getting drubbing, as is predicted in the poll surveys and is reduced to less than 100 votes, then Rahul 's position will also come under scanner and he may find it difficult to have his way with respect to the National Conference, and it is for this fear, Omar is going whole hog to praise Rahul even to the extent of seeing him as the next Prime Minister.
