| Election authorities attempt to gag media again | | Protests called off after Farooq, Soz intervene | | Saahil Suhail Anantnag , April 2: On the second day of nomination filing process, Election authorities here in South Kashmir's Anantnag district again attempted to gag the media and allowed only few selective Srinagar based videographers to cover the function, forcing over dozens reporters, cameramen to demonstrate outside the office of returning officer. However they dispersed off peacefully after National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and State congress chief Saif-u-din Soz assured to take-up the issue with Election Commission on behalf of media fraternity. Reporters and photojournalists working with Delhi based news channels and local dailies staged a sit in protest for hours together inside the DC office again today after they were not allowed to cover the event and alleged that only few journalists from Srinagar were allowed to cover the event. "Yesterday the officials of the district administration clearly told us that they will allow only four people but today they put a notice on main gates with directive that only accredited journalists can cover the event. However they allowed reporters who came from Srinagar who also don't have any accreditation at all, we held demo against the dual standards of election authorities." said Mir Aadil working with a national news channel. Gulzar Ahmad Ganie working with a local daily said, "Accreditation is a facility for journalists and at the same time it understood fact how a video journalist can get accreditation when information department is accrediting journalist on special considerations." Meanwhile on the second day, DC office which houses almost all the departments gave a deserted look as security officials closed both the gates with wire just to ensure hassle free Nomination filling process of candidates. People who had came from various areas of the district criticized local administration in choosing up the dc complex for nomination filling process of candidates which caused severe inconvenience to hundreds of people who had come to DC office for getting their problems resolved. "For the first time we came to know that they have chosen DC office for this process which otherwise was being conducted in Dak Banglow. The logic behind all this seems to be deliberate on behalf of administration." Mushtaq Ahmad, a Pahalgam resident said. Repeated attempts failed to contact election returning officer Anantnag parliamentary constituency. |
