Jammu celebrates Baisakhi fest with enthusiasm

Jammu , Apr 14: The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir today celebrated the festival of Baisakhi with fervour and enthusiasm.
Hundreds of people from across the district and its peripheries thronged the festival celebrations at Ranbir Canal, where the main function was held. Special stalls for kids and women were installed at the celebration site. Kids enjoyed camel rides and purchased toys , while tight security arrangements were also made for smooth celebration of the festival.
Also, the festival commemorates the launch of Khalsa panth by Sikh''s tenth Guru Gobind Singh at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib in 1699. It also relates to the start of the season in which wheat is harvested in north India.
A large number of devotees offered prayers at Nanaknagar, Digiana, Rehari, Chand Kour and Talab tiloo among others in Jammu region and Nangali Sahib Gurdawara in Poonch.
Akhand Paths (48-hour non-stop recitation of Sikh scripture), kirtans (singing of hymns) and kathas (religious discourses) were undertaken to mark the celebrations. Community kitchens were also organised on the occasion. Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah greeted the people on the festival.
The festival was celebrated at Akhnoor with lot of fanfare and traditional fervor. A larger number of people from different parts of the State participated in the function which was held at the right bank of river Chenab, Jia Potha.
The spot has historical significance as first Dogra Ruler of Jammu and Kashmir; Maharaja Gulab Singh who was coroneted here. The Baisakhi Mela is celebrated at the same spot every year.
The local artists presented colorful cultural bonanza, touching rich Dogra culture and heritage. The folk singers and artists mesmerized the jam packed audience with their offbeat acts. The artists also tried to showcase the rich heritage of Akhnoor town through their art. The Punjabi Gidha and skit on social evils were centre of attraction.
Baisakhi was celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety throughout Poonch district. The function was held at renowned Dera Nangali Sahib under the patronage of Mahant Manjeet Singhji, here today. Thousands of devotees from J&K and from other parts of Country thronged at the Dehra to pay their obeisance in the gurudwara.
A five-day colourful Baisakhi festival function was also inaugurated here on Saturday at Kanak Mandi by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu which was also attended by the Director Tourism, Jammu Soujanya Sharma.
First time introduced 'Tonga Ride', musical and folk programmes, decorated Heritage bazaars and special discounts of traditional items were the highlights during the festival which will conclude on April 16.
