SRINAGAR, Apr 14: National Conference-Congress coalition government in the state has virtually let both the factions of Hurriyat Conference to carry on the poll boycott campaign to derive its own meanings despite the fact that such a campaign is unlawful and threat to the peace.
No youth is likely to be slapped with the Public Safety Act nor will they be 'harassed' during the election days. The tone and tenor of the leaders, from CM to spokesperson is very soft because things are going their way.
"During the election times the leaders pretend to be very soft. The atmosphere is free from fear. Election days are more comfortable than the other days of the year. The Hurriyat Conference is allowed to carry its activities to keep the anti NC voters away from the polling booths," said Idrees Bhat, a PDP worker.
People believe that any activity that has bearing on the alliance in power; will never be allowed to happen. This all is done to keep the PDP out of power. The people aren't allowed even to raise their voice against the government's poor services.
It has been observed in the past that the government does not allow people to hold rallies even those of religious nature. Even the employees are canned and baton charged as they come on the roads with their problems. The government justifies the restrictions on the pretext that it may disturb the atmosphere.
"If whole Kashmir comes on the roads for the poll boycott campaign, the people in power won't mind it because boycotts ensure their victory. Some candidates lose by just some votes. These votes are of those people who remain away from polling because they are encouraged for the same," said Malik Aamir, Chotta Bazar.
There is a perception among some people interested in politics that only 10 to 12 percent of voting in many elections in the recent past enabled a party to form the government. They say that the situation would have been different had all the voters taken part in the elections. It would have turned the tables around.
"Fair election is a healthy sign of the democracy which are for sure to bring peace and prosperity. Unfair means leads to revolts which take an ugly turn at some point of time. The memories of unfair elections of 1987 are fresh in the minds of the people which produced so many destructive minds then," said Ghulam Nabi Malik, Soibugh-Budgam.
