| Terrorists creating added scare to hit polls | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 14 : Armed attack on the house of a NC leader near Khrew in south Kashmir on Sunday, in which two policemen were killed, and indiscriminate firing opened by militants near Soura, on the outskirts of Srinagar city, have indicated that militants had finalized the plan of creating added scare among people so that polling percentage during the ensuing Lok Sabha election in Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla constituencies remained very poor. Police sources said that groups of militants have carved out new hideouts in various segments of the three constituencies in the Kashmir valley for the purpose of triggering incidents of violence that was needed to force people, rather voters, to stay indoors on the days of polling. Sources said that as per the revised programme about 1400 out of 1546 polling booths in Srinagar constituency and about 1580 out of 1618 polling stations in Anantnag constituency were being kept under heavy security cover. According to these sources, instructions have gone to the district police authorities to upgrade the security grid in and around all the polling booths in Srinagar and Anantnag constituencies, where polling is due on April 30 and April 26 respectively. After the completion of polling in these two constituencies additional companies of police and paramilitary forces were to be deployed in various areas of Baramulla constituency. Official sources said that the Army authorities have been suggested to keep some companies of troops ready for meeting any eventuality. Reports said that after separatists suffered a setback from over 69 per cent polling in Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency, where polling was held on April 10, these separatists are said to have sought assistance from militants for enforcing the call for poll boycott. According to these reports, separatists had come to believe that voters in the three constituencies in the Kashmir valley may not fully respond to their call for poll boycott they have sought help from militants so that they kicked up incidents of violence. Police authorities fear hike in gun and grenade attacks from militants and it is in this connection that round the clock patrolling by police and paramilitary forces has been started in some highly sensitive areas in the three constituencies. |
