| Issue that boomeranged on Farooq Abdullah | | | Wittingly or unwittingly National Conference leader and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy,Dr Farooq Abdullah, who is the NC candidate from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency has raised an issue that has proved counter productive for him.In a bid to woo voters in Srinagar constituency and in two other constituencies,Anantnag and Baramulla, where the NC candidates face a strong challenge from the PDP. Farooq Abdullah had raised the issue of speedy and secret execution of the Parliament attack convict,Afzal Guru, telling people that even as union Minister he had not been informed about it. He had, while expressing innocence about the execution, blamed the former Union Home Secretary, R.K.Singh, for having implemented the court order on execution without informing Guru's family members and the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. And Farooq's bid to win over the support of voters for himself and the NC boomeranged after both R.K.Singh and the family members of Guru countered the NC leader with facts and emotions. India's former Home Secretary RK Singh has stated that it is the habit of National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah to talk without a reason. Singh has advised Farooq Abdullah to talk to his son Omar Abdullah if he is so interested in Afzal Guru's execution and his son would tell him all the details, whether he was informed or not about Afzal Guru's hanging.Singh's remarks have followed those from Farooq Abdullah who had blamed Singh, the then Home Secretary, for 'plotting' Guru's execution. Singh said it would be better for Farooq Abdullah to seek details about Guru's hanging from his son Omar Abdullah. Singh has gone a step further by suggesting to Farooq Abdullah to talk to his Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Omar Abdullah and find out the details about Afzal Guru's execution adding that if Farooq talked to his son the NC leader will never talk about Guru's execution in future. Singh is certain that Omar must have talked about Guru's execution to his father and hence Singh feels astonished over the claim of Farooq Abdullah about his ignorance of the issue when was untenable. The biggest setback for Farooq in his mission of wooing voters has come from the family members of Afzal Guru who asked the NC leader to stop shedding crocodile tears. These members have asked people in Kashmir not to take any of Farooq's comments seriously particularly those related to Afzal's hanging. The wife and brother of Afzal castigated Abdullah for his 'hollow' claim that RK Singh was squarely responsible for the secret hanging of Afzal Guru. Guru's family members claimed that whatever Farooq was saying about the execution of Afzal was simply a poll gimmick In fact there was neither any need nor any compulsion for Farooq Abdullah to talk about Guru's execution. He may have come to believe that if he and his son express ignorance about the plan under which Guru was hanged he and the NC could win all the three Lok Sabha seats from the valley because people in the valley have felt infuriated and insulted by the way Guru was executed. Was Farooq's reference to Guru's execution and his blame on R.K.Singh an act of desperation on the scale similar to Omar Abdullah who has declared that he would prefer going to Pakistan to supporting Narendra Modi ?.Though Omar was referring to BJP leader Giriraj Singh's views on Modi's opponents the Kashmir Chief Minister should have not countered Giriraj with a remark that may not find favour even in the Congress circles.
