| Killings of sarpanchs put big question mark on Omar Govt | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 23: The killings of sarpanchs and then en-mass resignation by other elected representatives of panchayats has put a big question mark on Omar Abdullah government for not providing protection to them. Resignation of these sarpanches and panches will take state back to its earlier days when people were not participating in democratic exercise. Omar Abdullah has been claiming that Panchayat elections was one of the biggest achievement of his government but the kind of damage these deaths have done to the democracy is vast and the Chief Minister must not forget that it was his duty to provide protection to these members of panchayats. Now, when these sarpanchs and panchs have resigned and have pledged not to participate in any kind of election process, it will be the victory of separatist elements who have been continuously and rigorously campaigning for a poll boycott. After the heavy turnout in two phases in Jammu region, people at the helm of affairs and general public were expecting that Kashmir valley will also break the earlier records despite the fact that separatists have been trying hard to ensure poll boycott. But now, people may be scared to come out and vote. If voting percentage remains low, it will directly benefit the National Conference (NC) who since 1996 is getting benefit due to poll boycott. The government must bring back the confidence among people in general and elected representatives of Panchayat in particular so that democratic process moves ahead smoothly. |
