J&K becomes safe haven for 'death' drug mafia

SRINAGAR, Apr 23: The state of Jammu & Kashmir has become a safe haven for the companies selling substandard medicines as the trade is going on unabated under the nose of government agencies.
Jammu & Kashmir is an ideal market for the companies selling spurious drugs. The Drug and Food Control organization recently came up with a list of twenty seven items of substandard medicines which are procured from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. According to the sources there are hundreds of chemist shops which are not licensed. Some of the shopkeepers have managed to get the licenses due to a nexus between these shopkeepers and the officials of the concerned organization.
"Most of the shopkeepers in Jammu & Kashmir have managed to get licenses against the payments. These shopkeepers trade spurious drugs so as to make more wealth in lesser period of time. The state is witnessing a boom in the trade thanks to the Drug and Food Control organization,'' said Javed Ahmad.
Javed Ahmad added that the state government is watching all this happening like a mute spectator. People are equally responsible for the mess because they are helping this trade to flourish as they continue to take this poison without any consideration for its negative effects.
Drugs are meant for recuperation of a person from an illness but in Jammu and Kashmir the story is different as drugs affect a person adversely. Instead of improving the condition of patients these drugs deteriorate the condition of a patient.
"The sad side of this story is that some doctors, who are consciously dead, are involved in this heinous crime. They prescribe such medicines to the patients which are spurious in nature. The patients are strictly advised to take these medicines from the shops as mentioned by the medicos," said a group of people at the SMHS hospital.
There is a general perception among the people that the doctors prescribe particular medicines only after receiving an assurance that they would receive hefty gifts in lieu. Medicos receive gifts like LED TV, Laptop, motor cycle and even four wheelers from the pharmaceutical companies without checking the efficacy of the prescribed medicines.
Nobody can deny that Drug and Food Control organization was created to identify the violators and bring them to the book. But nothing of that kind happened. The Drug and Flood Control organization seems to have taken the side of the merchants of the death, than to go against them.
