| No Parl NC-Cong bonhomie? | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 15: At a time when the exit polls are projecting a dismal picture for the National Conference-Congress coalition in the six Parliamentary seats of the state, the stage is set for the counting of votes polled during the elections held over five phases in Jammu and Kashmir. Along with 537 Parliamentary seats in the other parts of the country counting for the six Parliamentary seats of the state would start at 8 in the morning tomorrow. The counting will start simultaneously for the six seats and the results are expected to be out in the afternoon or late afternoon. Polling for the six Lok Sabha seats in the state started on April 10 with the elections for the Jammu-Poonch seat. This was followed by elections for Udhampur-Doda, Anantnag-Pulwama, Srinagar-Budgam and Baramulla-Kupwara and Ladakh Lok Sabha seats on April 17, April 24, April 30 and May 7 respectively. The exit poll results have projected that parties like Bharatiya Janta Party and People’s Democratic Party would emerge as the big gainers at the end of the elections. On the other hand parties like National Conference and Congress are losing ground on account of anti-incumbency factor in the state. According to the exit poll of Anand Bazar Patrika (ABP) group BJP and PDP are likely to get two seats each in Jammu and Kashmir regions respectively. This exit poll predicts that NC would win one seat while as Congress would get no seat in Jammu and Kashmir. The exit poll says that one seat would go to independents and for this Ladakh seems to be obvious choice. The India Today exit poll has given two seats each to PDP and BJP while as one seat each has been shown against the accounts of National Conference and Congress. The India TV exit poll has given three seats to BJP while as two seats have been given to National Conference and one seat to PDP. The Times Now exit poll has predicted that BJP and PDP will win two seats each while as one seat each is likely to be win by National Conference and Congress in the state. The exit poll by NDTV has predicted that all the three seats of Kashmir valley would be won by PDP thus causing a huge embarrassment to the National Conference. In the meantime, the six venues selected for the counting of votes across the state have been virtually sealed with security forces personnel keeping a tight vigil over the entire situation. The polling staff that has been given training for the counting of votes has been ordered to report at the counting centres at 6 in the morning on Friday. It is expected that the initial trends would be available after couple of hours of the counting of votes. The final results would be available by late afternoon and the things would get clear by the evening. The final results are likely to guide the mainstream parties to formulate the strategy for the Assembly elections that are slated later this year. |
