| People of J&K reposed full faith in Indian democracy | | Kashmir, Siachen legitimately Indian | | MINCING NO WORDS Neha
JAMMU, May 21: The other day, Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit said that the next five months are very crucial for India-Pakistan relations and demanded resolution of "Kashmir issue", saying "India has to fulfill its commitment" given to the world. He hinted at the right to self-determination. "It (J&K) is an important issue and government of India has to fulfill its commitment given to the world. It is the part of the composite dialogue. We should not shy away from contentious issues. When we will deal with each of the issues, we will be able to move forward…J&K, Siachen all issues are doable," he said in an interaction with members of the Press Club of India, New Delhi. He also underlined the need to accelerate the dialogue process and suggested that there should be no pre-condition. He made this ridiculous suggestion when asked to comment on the statement of Narendra Madi -- who was appointed Prime Minister of India on May 20 by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee -- that terror and talks cannot go together. What Basit said was not new. He only reiterated the age-old Pakistani stand on J&K, Siachen, composite dialogue and so on knowing it full well that the situation in New Delhi has undergone a complete change and that the foreign policy of the Narendra Dodi-led NDA stable and strong government will be different from that of Manmohan Singh's government. Gone are the days when Pakistan used to browbeat and blackmail the weak-kneed Congress-led UPA Government and weak Manmohan Singh and get concessions from India. Now the Indian foreign policy vis-à-vis Pakistan, China, the US and all other countries will be guided solely by the Indian geo-political and economic interests. Pakistan will do well to recognize this fact and the sooner it does so the better. India will never dilute its stand on J&K. This is the fact and only fools can overlook it. Basit made a fool of himself when he questioned the just-organized Lok Sabha elections in J&K. He said there was lower percentage of polling in the state and this fact "has to be taken note of". It was clear from what he said that he willfully withheld the truth. The truth was that over 71 per cent eligible voters exercised their franchise in Jammu province and Ladakh region and over 45 per cent of the voters in Kashmir voted in favour of the candidates by whom they wanted themselves to be represented in the Lok Sabha, the highest law-making body. The people of Kashmir participated in the electoral exercise against all odds, including threat to their life and limb. 45 per cent polling in Kashmir cannot be described as lower polling percentage. The truth, in short, is that an overwhelming majority of population in the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh was, is and shall be religiously committed to India. Leave aside a handful of Geelanis in Kashmir. They are no factor in the state's political situation. |
