Azad facing pressure to play bigger role in state politics | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 24: Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is facing intense pressure from the party cadre to play bigger role in State politics for the coming Assembly elections scheduled to be held by the end of this year. Totally demoralized by the complete rout of the party in Jammu region due to Modi Wave in the Lok Sabha polls, Ghulam Nabi Azad is only ray of hope among Congress workers who are of the opinion that only a leader likes the stature of Azad can revive shattered morale of the workers. Credible sources said during introspection meeting, held on May 23 to introspect worst ever debacle of party in Lok Sabha polls, majority of the Congress leaders urged Ghulam Nabi Azad to play bigger role in the coming Assembly elections. In the presence of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Saif-ud-Din Soz, some Ministers made it clear that without Azad's bigger role it is not possible to revive shattered confidence of grass-root level workers who have been completely demoralized due to defeat of party candidates in Lok Sabha polls. Sources further said that some Congress leaders have already written letters to the high command to give bigger responsibility to Ghulam Nabi Azad in State politics. Most of the Congress workers are thinking that party is passing through very crucial phase and role of Azad is must to give direction of the Congress at this juncture. Sources said that Azad, who is badly dejected over performance of party leaders in just concluded Lok Sabha elections, is reluctant to take bigger responsibility but pressure on him is increasing. Azad, who fought Lok Sabha elections from Udhampur-Doda seat despite strong Modi Wave, lost election all due to the bad performance of party leaders especially leaders of Udhampur and Kathua districts. |
