| Kashmir optimistic about Modi-Nawaz meet | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 26: Notwithstanding severe opposition from the hawks, the Pakistan Prime Minister arrived in New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi. Similarly Modi ignored opposition from Congress and Shiv Sena and went ahead with the idea of hosting the Pakistan Prime Minister. Nawaz Sharief has opted to keep the separatist leadership away from the Pakistan embassy this time. This is the first time in the recent history that visiting head of Pakistan Government has chosen not to invite the Hurriyat leaders. This shows Nawaz's sincerity viz-a-viz the dialogue that is going to happen tomorrow between Modi and Sharief. The former Pakistan President, General Parvez Musharraf invited the Hurriyat leaders to the embassy at New Delhi when he arrived for the Agra Summit. The then Government of India had subtly objected the move but Musharraf went ahead and held detailed meetings with the Hurriyat leaders. But this time the message seems to be of trust, sincerity and friendship. The Pakistan Government while commenting on the Modi's invite a few days ago said Islamabad was interested in discussing all the issuing with New Delhi. The separatists in Kashmir too have reacted cautiously to the development. The Mirwaiz led Hurriyat has assured Modi and Nawaz of its full support and cooperation. However, the hardliners like Asia Andrabi as usual see a conspiracy in the invite. But by and large, the message from the Valley is also encouraging. Even Syed Ali Geelani has urged Modi of taking tangible measures on Kashmir. There is a realization in the Valley that Kashmir issue is too complicated to be settled overnight. However, Modi's election has generated hopes in Kashmir and people, by and large expect him to address the issue in its right perspective. |
