| Adhoc body runs scam tainted J&K Board, new chairman unlikely | | No lessons learnt from Lok Sabha debacle | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, May 26: Affairs in Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (SBSE) seemingly showcase complete refusal of Congress Ministers to learn form the debacle in the recently held Lok Sabha elections in Jammu region. Though the top leaders of the party did hold a marathon meeting in Srinagar with the Ministers both cabinet as well as state but no action was taken against the constituency specific and tainted Ministers. Instead, blame was solely put on the workers for having not been able to convert the purported public support for Congress into votes. To add insult to the injury, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for School Education Tara Chand in blatant violation of rules and regulations appointed Dr. Renu Goswami as Chairman of the board through a Government order. Language of order does give an indication that Goswami would be heading the board till the NC-Congress coalition Government demits office. It has appointed Goswami as Chairman till further orders. Goswami who was not falling in the criteria set by the committee which had been constituted to find chairman for the board, according to sources managed to get the plum post of Chairman besides keeping the post of Secretary with her. They added that the outgoing Secretary Hridesh Kumar Singh initially preferred to keep the board under his control but when he was to proceed on leave, he had called the meeting of the panel where CVs of around 10 candidates were to be evaluated and selection was to be made. But he was told not to proceed further, said the sources while adding that for reasons best known to the concerned Minister, an order was issued asking Goswami to take charge and keep it till further orders. Not only has Goswami been handed over the reigns of board but the Ministry is making no effort to appoint a permanent chairman to the board. The process had seemingly been stopped for all times to come. Not only this, sources said that a recruitment scam has also surfaced in the board with allegations being leveled against two of the retired board employees and several other serving officials. They added that ETT college issue which is now in the High Court too has damaged the reputation of Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKSBSE). If the insiders are to be believed, this is the first time in the history of board that since the day the new Minister has taken over, its working has suffered immensely. The Government appointed Chairman was removed unceremoniously and then, the process for appointing a new one was delayed till the time the same Goswami who had been ordered to report to the Higher Education Department was made in-charge. All left the board but Goswami stayed on. Sources further disclosed that Goswami who does not fulfill the criteria is making knee deep efforts to ensure change in the criteria, subsequently to be followed by Government appointing her permanently as Chairman till she does not attain the retirement age. They further said that Goswami is being backed by the Minister's office. Early Times made several attempts to contact Dr. Renu Goswami as well as Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand but there was no response. |
