JAMMU, May 26: As Dr Jitendra Singh sworn in as Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Union Council of Ministers led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of the state in general and Jammu region in particular while pinning high hopes on the 'doctor turned politician' termed his induction as a positive development in state politics. A cross section of the society in Jammu while speaking to Early Times said that no doubt the responsibility given to Dr Jitendra Singh is huge but they expect that his intellect added with Modi's leadership qualities will prevail in discharging his duty as a Minister. Though Dr Singh has not much of administrative experience as his entry into active politics came only five years ago, some of the prominent citizens feel that he is a capable person and can easily handle the job assigned to him. "No doubt Dr Jitendra Singh is making a maiden entry into the parliament as well the Union cabinet but he is a highly qualified person and it is hoped that he will deliver goods with his sheer intelligence," said MK Bhardwaj, President, Jammu Kashmir High Court Bar Association. "Dr Singh's induction into Union ministry is good gesture on part of the BJP leadership… As a citizen of Jammu and a representative of legal community, we have lot of expectations from Dr Singh…. People have reposed faith in him and hopefully he will address the problems confronting the common citizen of Jammu region," he added. While expressing happiness on induction of Dr Singh in Modi led government, the President of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) Y V Sharma said that on behalf of the business community of Jammu, I welcome BJP's decision to give representation to the state in the Union ministry. "We are happy that Dr Singh has become a Union Minister… We expect that he will take care of the issues which the state of J&K is facing… I am fully sure that Dr Singh would handle the job in a thorough professional manner," said YV Sharma. Dr Jitendra Singh, born in 1956, reached the corridors of power after inflicting a crushing defeat to none other than the Congress stalwart and former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad from Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency. Dr Singh, who was considered as a dark horse right from the day one of the election process, won the Udhampur-Doda seat with a handsome margin of more than sixty thousand votes. With the induction of Dr Jitendra Singh as a Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Union Council of Ministers, the Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat again gets representation at the centre after a long gap of ten years. Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, who represented the seat for three consecutive terms as a BJP nominee from 1996 to 2004 went on to become a Minister in Atal Behari Vajpayee led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and held various ministries from 1999 to 2004. |
