| LMD slaps Rs 1.25 lakh fine on five national reputed companies for violating laws | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 2: Continuing with its efforts to enforce mandatory declarations on all pre-packed goods for the information of consumers, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) J&K has realized a fine upto tune of Rs 1.25 lakh from five companies dealing with sale of eatables like Papad, chocolates, Biscuits & other household items for violating the provisions of the related laws. According to Manoj Prabhakar, Deputy Controller Legal Metrology (Consumer Protection),all the pre-packed goods which are being packed in the absence of consumers must declare legibly & conspicuously Net Weight & Max Retail price( Inclusive of all taxes) along with Packing date, address of the packer/Importer & consumer helpline numbers on the label securely affixed on the goods. "On inspection of big sale stores in Jammu, it was observed that products were offered for sale to the consumers without declaring all these declarations & even small self made stickers were being used for the purpose & the manner of putting such stickers was such that it primafacia appears to be at the concealed locations, he added. He said, "Some of the deceptive packages were offered with lucrative schemes with enhanced prices to lure the gullible consumers." Taking the cognizance of the matter in respect of deficiencies, the department seized the products & issued notice to all companies to strictly comply with the existing provisions of law in the interest of consumers & till rectification ,no sale shall be made of the deceptive goods. "The management of the companies pleaded guilty & applied for composition with the assurance to correct the labeling procedure. The department charged @ 25000/- fine from each from the five defaulter companies, he added. |
