JAMMU, June 2: As the Narendra Modi led Union Government has included in its agenda of priorities cleansing of river Ganga, a ray of hope has rekindled back home for a mission on similar lines for River Tawi which is crying for salvaging its pious identity. Life Line of Jammu as it is called, the river is in a state of complete neglect with filth and garbage of many old city areas flowing into it through nullahs and its banks having become malba dumping sites for the city dwellers. Thanks to ever indifferent class of politicians of all hues in Jammu and an ever discriminatory Governments towards Jammu whose focus has always remained Kashmir even for such causes. Lakes and Waterways department is a brazen example to substantiate this as the purpose of its existence is to preserve and protect only lakes, rivers and water bodies of Kashmir Division. Not a single penny has been spent by the Government in initiating any such step for protecting River Tawi from dilapidation on many fronts.
The step initiated by the Union Government to cleanse river Ganga has been hailed not just for restoring its sanctity but all across by those having concern for environment. While there are umpteen number of so called environmentalists and NGOs who have been claiming to work towards 'Save Tawi' mission, their efforts have been seen more as occasional rituals which make no difference on the ground. One of the factors for no impact on ground is lack of political will and passion from politicians and leaders of Jammu be it from ruling Congress and National Conference or BJP and PDP in the opposition camp. Thousands of tonnes of garbage and filth finds its way into river everyday which pollute the waters of this river the extent of which has reached perhaps beyond retrieval point now. The leaders many of whom are Ministers, MLAs and MPs too watch this happen with utmost sense of neglect and indifference as they seldom raise the issue with Government. While one wonders at the attitude of Congress for being part of Government for so many years now in not showing even scant concern towards deteriorating condition of Tawi, one is also aghast at the silence of so called saviours of Jammu -the BJP whose silence in the Assembly speaks volumes that they too are unconcerned.
A bitter reality for Jammu and its people remains that the Government has one full fledged department for protection of rivers and water bodies which gets lakhs of rupees every year albeit only for cleansing and preservation of rivers falling under entire Kashmir division. River Tawi is no body's priority despite a brazen fact that most of Jammu areas get water supply from its pumping stations in Sheetli where filteration plants exist. There is no department within Jammu which shows will to preserve the river from further deterioration. JMC has shown its concern only by erecting some placards as ritualistic step which read ...'dumping of malba is strictly prohibited...---JMC'. Ironically, it is on those sites that huge mlaba is dumped by people , mostly for the purpose of encroachments. While Tawi is dying a slow death due to utter neglect of Government, people watch it with helplessness. Cleansing of Ganga has generated some hope as people wonder whether the new MP of BJP would raise the issue with Central Government for protecting the river Tawi. |
