| NC insults nationalist Jammu, Ladakh | | Ethnic nationalism | | Rustam JAMMU, June 2: The NC of the rejected Abdullahs has once again insulted the nationalist people of Jammu and Ladakh and similar other sections of society, including internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus, who are religiously and emotionally committed to India and who have made supreme sacrifices during all these more than 66 years of independence to defeat the separatist politics in the Kashmir valley, the real trouble spot and den of anti-national and communal activities. The NC insulted the national constituency and outraged its sensitivities by claiming that whatever had been happening in the state is nothing but a manifestation of the palpable identity of Jammu and Kashmir's ethnic nationalism. "The contemporary history of Jammu and Kashmir is a placid testament to how New Delhi has more than often not failed to understand the psyche, the sentiment and the palpable identity of Jammu and Kashmir ethnic nationalism," it said two days ago to lodge its protest against New Delhi. How could the NC say what it so brazenly said! How could the NC, which stands virtually decimated, abuse, insult and ridicule the people of Jammu and Ladakh and say that they are part and parcel of what it called ethnic nationalism, a highly dangerous anti-India concept. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are ethnically different from the people of Kashmir. They are intensely pro-India and against those yearning for a regime outside the political and constitutional organization of India. They are even opposed to the Congress and the 2014 mandate proves that. Similarly, the Pathwari-speaking Muslims and non-Muslims and Gujjar and Bakerwal Muslims are ethnically different from the Kashmiri-speaking ethnic Sunnis. Their language is different; their culture is different; their way of life is different; their eating habits are different; their dresses are different; their political perceptions are contradictory and mutually exclusive; and so on. The Gujjars and Bakerwals have already got the ST status and the Pathowari-speaking Muslims are struggling for it and the ST status is available only under the Indian Constitution. The NC not only insulted the people of Jammu and Ladakh by seeking to give the country understand that they are part and parcel of "ethnic nationalism" (read the ongoing unpopular struggle for greater autonomy or independence), but also outraged their sentiments by shamelessly claiming that they, like (a section of) Kashmiri Muslims, also want Article 370 to stay and become a permanent feature. "It is important to understand the rationale and reason for Article 370 - not just the part that is derived from constitutional law and legal matrices but the part that is a derivative of the aspirations and sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Also to a considerable extent put into context by the struggle, agony and sacrifices of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the last two decades. This is a perspective that has been missing in most debates on the Article 370 issue," it said in public print. The NC may say what it wants, but the fact remains that the NC is a non-representative body having no moral and political right to speak even for Kashmir. Srinagar used to be its support-base till the other day and it has also lost that. In fact, the defeat of NC president and former Chief Minister and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah could be described as a last nail on the coffin of this Kashmir party. |
