Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 13: Worried over the grant of amnesty to stone pelters by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, the Union Home Ministry has sought details about the package.
Hundreds of youth were arrested and challaned for their alleged involvement in stone pelting incidents during the 2010 agitation. The agitation left 130 persons dead and evoked severe reaction from the people. However, the Government decided to go soft on the stone pelters and around 1800 youth have been granted amnesty till date. In the coming days the amnesty is likely to be extended to 50 youth.
The state Government is doing it as one of the many measures it's taking to show itself as a pro-people Government after the debacle in the Parliamentary election.
Though, law and order is state subject and the state Government is in its right to release stone pelters, but Home Ministry feels such blanket amnesty has the potential of threatening internal security especially in the Kashmir region.
"There were some youth , who were highly radicalized and picked up the separatists on behalf of the terrorist outfits to stage disturbance. The street protests were part of the changed tactics of terrorists to take off the focus of the security forces," said a senior official in the Home Ministry.
The official said, with the changed equation across the border, and manifested in the recent terrorist attacks in the Pakistan, there is very much possibility that such radicalized youth, when free, would be picked up by the terrorists and trained and then given arms.
"We have managed to bring infiltration very low. But if terrorists start coming from the inland than it poses serious challenge and threat. It can't be taken lightly," the official said.
The move by the state Government to release stone pelters also comes at the time when Centre is planning to announce a major package for the return of the Kashmiri Pandits.
"Any disturbance, which these stone pelters has the potential to create, when the package is to be announced could be very embarrassing for the new Government apart for other facts. So all the things have to be analysed and treated seriously," said the official.
