Early Times Report

budgam, June 18: It is more than five months now since the severe land slides occurred in several villages of Budgam district in central Kashmir , but till date the authorities have not been able to compensate , rehabilitate and relocate the affected families. The affected families are living with their relatives and some live even under open sky. This is pertinent to mention that Kashmir valley and areas of PirPanchal and Chenab valley in Jammu region had witnessed heavy snowfall right from November last year until which caused lot of damage to the life and property across various parts of Kashmir as many houses have been totally damaged in many areas of Kashmir valley like Frestwar , Shalnad , Hangoo , Neegu , Kutabal , Batwodder, Theraa, Ledan , and several other villages.
In Frestwar village of Khansahib tehsil of Budgam alone as many as one dozen houses had completely collapsed as the land beneath these houses eroded due to accumulation of water and increased water table in from January to March . The snowfall which occurred in December last year had plenty of water content and the land in Frestwar village being soft and muddy (karewa land) had a direct impact on the land which started moving in different directions especially in the areas which are located on edges of karewa land. "Five houses belonging to Gujjar community in Jingoo Mohalla have completely damaged and till date no alternate accommodation had been provided to them. Even the administration has not provided any tents or blankets to the victims , even the senior district officials haven't visited our village " said a local resident. "Had the authorities undertaken snow clearance in the area under MNREGA the situation would have not been so bad , it is due to heavy accumulation of snow in the area which lead to such a disaster. Our area has not seen power and water from the last one month and authorities are least bothered , it seems as if we people are cattle " said Abdul Rashid another local resident. Locals have appealed authorities to come to their rescue and ensure that proper relief and rehabilitation process is undertaken in the area around Frestwar. Locals allege that Government has promised them for relocation of their village to a nearby area called Marg but this remains just a promise and is unfulfilled from the last 25 years.
