Top leaders angry, ask workers to locate 'safe constituencies'
Fazal Khan
SRINAGAR, Aug 12: National Conference leaders today once again failed to finalize the third list of candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections slated to be held later this year.
Sources told Early Times that top party leaders had summoned the district presidents from different parts of the Valley to the party headquarters at Nawa-i- Subah here to seek the feedback on the names of the probable candidates which the party leadership has zeroed on.
"The ground level workers who had assembled in the party headquarters held discussions on various issues, including the lack of coordination, among the party leaders," said a NC insider.
He said that party is in "dilemma" over the issue of announcing the third list of its candidates as top leaders, including the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, are angry with the NC workers for failing to locate a few "safe constituencies" for them.
The party workers, who had assembled in the Nawai Subah complex, expressed dismay over party leadership ignoring their suggestions and not addressing their genuine grievances. "This is not the time for us to discuss what happened in the past. Our focus should be on the forthcoming elections. We will solve all your problems if we win the elections," a top NC leader is understood to have told the workers.
The NC leader told the workers that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is disappointed with performance of his workers in Ganderbal. "This area was considered to be the stronghold of the party. It is unfortunate that Chief Minister has decided not to contest from the constituency. He is upset over lack of coordination and the rivalry between the NC workers," the NC leader told the workers.
The workers were told that if they fail to bury their differences it can have far reaching consequences and they can face expulsion from the party.
An insider said that after hectic deliberations workers suggested that Omar should contest either from Hazrtbal or Sonawar constituency. "Sonawar is the safest constituency for the Chief Minister. Hazratbal is not that safe and we can't predict the mood of voters," NC workers are understood to have told the party leaders.
Sources said that NC workers who had assembled at the party headquarters were upset when none of the top leaders failed to turn up to address them. "It seems party leadership is not interested in discussing the important issues. They still believe that they will win the elections without doing any groundwork," they added. The NC workers said, party leaders need to "wake up" and face the realities rather than "day dreaming" and shifting the blame on us.
National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the 3rd list of the party candidates is being finalized and it would be issued after August 15. " The third list will include the name of the Chief Minister."
However, he refused to comment on whether senior NC leader and brother of Dr Farooq Abdullah, Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, would contest the forthcoming elections or not.
